TECHNOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS FOR A CLEAN GANGA ESTUARY
The River Ganga has enormous religious, economic and navigational value. Yet it ranks among the most polluted rivers of the world.

The Gangetic delta is one of the most delicate ecological niches on the planet. It is also an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. West Bengal harbours more than 50% of the Gangetic delta and also, a significant stretch of the River Ganga’s distributary system (River Hooghly).

Problems of the Ganga estuarine region:
  • The region is immensely prone to waste accumulation
  • Loss of natural habitat as a result of destructive anthropogenic activities/climate change etc.
  • Economically under-privileged area. A region with low human development index
  • A region of low industrial output
  • Poverty, backwardness and inward dynamics scuttle development.

Mitigating Efforts
Structured programmes for cleaning the Ganga estuary have been taken up from time to time. However, the efforts have not yielded satisfactory results.

If significant improvements have to be made on a reasonable time scale, innovative approaches need to be adopted. The way forward includes Participatory technology development through large-scale stakeholder/community involvement, crowd sourcing and indigenous innovations.

Clarion Call
Dovetailing with the National Mission to clean the River Ganga, TOCIC Kolkata, invites students, teachers and innovators to make use of the PRISM programme to test their innovative ideas/products and up-scale the same.

Make a Difference
Some areas where innovative ideas/processes/products may be applied:
  • Waste Recycling technologies
  • Technologies for Effluent purification
  • Technologies to reduce nitrogen overload in biomass
  • Pollutant sensors
  • Bio-fertilizers
  • New materials as clay and soil substitutes
  • Energy efficient building materials
  • Zero discharge sanitation
                                            ...plus many more

Call for Proposal under PRISM
PRISM (Promoting Innovations in Individuals, Start-ups and MSMEs) scheme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India aims to support individual innovators, autonomous institutions, registered societies and MSME so as to achieve the agenda of inclusive development. The scheme is implemented through a set of TePP Outreach cum Cluster Innovation Centres (TOCICs). PRISM provides grants, technical guidance and mentoring to individual innovators and technology solution providers......
